It is a joy to serve as pastor of Central United Methodist Church since June 2016.  This is an active and engaged congregation seeking to serve Christ and our Newberry community from the center of the beautiful downtown area.  Everyone is most welcome here!

My wife, Donna teaches Special Education with very young children in the Newberry County School District.  We have three grown children and one wonderful grandson.  Named for my loving Dad, our grandson, Forest, is the special center of our extended family!

I enjoy all aspects of ordained ministry including preaching, planning and leading sacred worship, personal/pastoral visitation with individuals in need, the administration and guidance of the everyday life of Central Church and some Annual Conference and District duties.

If not involved in church activities, then you will probably find me involved with volunteer work for the Boy Scouts of America.  Working in the garden is also an enjoyable hobby for me.  Both Donna and I appreciate our two new kittens.

Central Church has a strong ministry menu including Stephen Ministry to persons desiring individual care relationships with a well-qualified person, an engaging music program of contemporary, traditional and children’s groups, a number of study options in the scriptures and contemporary life, ways to reach out to the Newberry community providing food, housing renewal and other means of support.

If I may provide assistance, information or other guidance, then please feel free to contact me at the church office at 803-276-3903, extension 1001 or via e-mail at  I am also active on Face Book, Instagram and Twitter.  Let’s get together soon and share friendship and the love of Christ Jesus!

Director of Music Ministries

Merritt Moseley

Send Email

Hello and welcome to Central United Methodist Church. My name is Merritt Moseley and I have been a member of Central Church in one manner or another since I was two years old. I grew up in this church while my mother was the choir director for over 15 years. I never thought I would surpass her service, but I am now completing my 23rd year as Central’s Director of Music.

While having a college degree in music I am a teacher of social studies at Newberry High School. I am married to Ann Taylor Moseley, my partner and collaborator in music and children for nearly 30 years. We have 3 grown children (who all grew up in this church): Joshua, Sarah, and William.

Come join the chancel choir which rehearses on Wednesdays and participates in the 11:00 Traditional service. Or, if praise worship is for you, join our praise team which leads the 9:00 Contemporary service. No matter which service you prefer, you are needed and wanted to join our tradition of glorifying God with beautiful music.

Praise Band/Children's Choir Leader

Chris Wofford

My name is Christopher Wofford and I am the praise band director and the children's choir director here at Central.  I am married to Melody Bolinger-Wofford and we live in Simpsonville, SC.

I am also the band director at Whitmire Community School in Newberry County.  I teach marching band, concert band, jazz band, high school music appreciation, and middle school chorus. I have been teaching since 2007.

I am originally from Spartanburg, SC where I was taught by my mother and father, John and Robin Wofford, to sing and play gospel music.  The Wofford Family would sing and play at churches just about every Saturday night, and sometimes at revivals throughout the week, to spread the word of God through song.  My dad, most of the time, would preach the word after our singing.

I graduated from Newberry College in 2007.  I am an Indian!!!...OK, OK, a wolf, as well...(Newberry College changed their mascot from Indian to Wolves after I graduated for those of you who may not know.)

I taught in Lake City for one year before moving back to Newberry County to teach elementary music and became Whitmire's assistant band director for 4 years.

I was Pentecostal until I joined Central United Methodist Church about 2 years ago.  It is a wonderful place to worship and a friendly place to visit.  The praise service is at 9:00 am and the traditional service is at 11:00 am on Sundays.  The children meet on Wednesdays from 5:30 pm - 6:00 pm for choir and hand bell practice during the school year.  Come to visit and worship with us! 😊
