Dear Central Church Family,
It is a real joy to have been appointed by Bishop Jonathan Holston and his Cabinet to serve as your parsonage family! We look forward to many positive experiences together for the service of Christ in Newberry and beyond. Already we have felt your gracious welcome in many ways and through a number of persons.
We also will be welcoming a new District Superintendent to the Greenwood District, The Reverend Steven Love. The Reverend Love and I served in the Charleston District together. I know that we will be greatly enriched and assisted by his capable leadership.
Our immediate family includes three children, a dear daughter in law and our first grandchild, Forest. You will probably tire of hearing us brag about Forest, age 1, named for my beloved father and on what would have been Donna's dad's 89th birthday. Both of our fathers are now part of the Church Triumphant. Our oldest son, Myles and his wife, Erin live, along with Forest in Washington, DC. Our daughter, Lydia is teaching summer reading camp at Westminster Elementary School in Oconee County. Our youngest, Alec, is employed with the Boy Scouts as a District Executive in Rock Hill.
Please feel free to let me know of any pastoral needs such as illness, hospitalization, etc. It has always been my policy that if you are not sure of such needs, then I would rather hear twice or three times than not at all. I will be in the office for the first day on Monday, June 27.
Let us rejoice that our United Methodist appointive system has brought us together for the sharing of our talents and the excitement of Christian life at all ages and here in the beautiful community of Newberry and the southern South Carolina Piedmont!
My name is Christopher Wofford and I am the praise band director and the children's choir director here at Central. I am married to Melody Bolinger-Wofford and we live in Simpsonville, SC.
I am also the band director at Whitmire Community School in Newberry County. I teach marching band, concert band, jazz band, high school music appreciation, and middle school chorus. I have been teaching since 2007.
I am originally from Spartanburg, SC where I was taught by my mother and father, John and Robin Wofford, to sing and play gospel music. The Wofford Family would sing and play at churches just about every Saturday night, and sometimes at revivals throughout the week, to spread the word of God through song. My dad, most of the time, would preach the word after our singing.
I graduated from Newberry College in 2007. I am an Indian!!!...OK, OK, a wolf, as well...(Newberry College changed their mascot from Indian to Wolves after I graduated for those of you who may not know.)
I taught in Lake City for one year before moving back to Newberry County to teach elementary music and became Whitmire's assistant band director for 4 years.
I was Pentecostal until I joined Central United Methodist Church about 2 years ago. It is a wonderful place to worship and a friendly place to visit. The praise service is at 9:00 am and the traditional service is at 11:00 am on Sundays. The children meet on Wednesdays from 5:30 pm - 6:00 pm for choir and hand bell practice during the school year. Come to visit and worship with us!
